Y’all Come! (to San Diego)

You ever sit there and wonder how or when certain “files” in your brain were created? On one hand, I know exactly why the words of the “Diff’rent Strokes” theme song are permanently etched in my brain.  With afternoons spent indulging in the travails of the Drummond boys, it’s no wonder I can still (30 years later), sing the lyrics with perfect rhythm. I earned that knowledge; doesn’t mean there’s much use for it now.

On the other hand, one file whose origin I’ve never been able to track (before today) is the old country song, “Y’all Come”. For those of you who are seeking an ear worm, here it is, as originally recorded in 1954.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWn0HmvDexQ . Until today, I was sure I heard it on some Sunday evening broadcast of Hee Haw. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I now know I should blame “The Dukes of Hazzard,” specifically Loretta Lynn, who apparently performed it on the show in Season 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27GtS9llazA . My love for this show aside, you get the drift, and for this song that you’ll be singing for the rest of the day, you’re welcome.

While the Gartner Digital Marketing Conference is less hootenanny and backyard BBQ than perhaps the vibe the song describes, there’s something about the community that’s building behind it that I think will bring insight, perspective, and energy to those of us who are living the digital marketing life, and who will gather for three days of discussion about how to do what we do better.

The sign-ups are rolling in. The content is already in the hands of the editors. The plane tickets are bought. And the market is with me in saying that this is going to be a good place to be. Every week, another list appears that says, “get there.” Don’t believe me? Check these out (there are more, but I don’t want to appear flashy).

So join us if you can. As conference chair, I’ve seen the presentations, and the speaker, sponsor, and attendee list, and I know it’s going to be marvelous. So pardon me as I take the mic, and extend the invite one more time: “Y’all Come!”

When your title is digital
And you feel like you’re scrambling
You just need some help to light the way
You’re looking for some wisdom
And tips to be a winner
And fun, laughs, and food to fill the day

Y’all come! (Y’all come!)
Y’all come! (Y’all come!)
Well, you all come to see us, learn, and play,
Y’all come! (Y’all come!)
Y’all come! (Y’all come!)
San Diego, on May 5th – that’s the day!
